Our flagship wine, HāLo, is named for our children, Hailey and Loren, who grew up in the middle of our Hillspring Vineyard in the Mayacamas foothills of western Napa Valley, the source of this superb red wine. The vineyard's rocky, shallow soils, coupled with a climate protected from fog and wind, make Hillspring the perfect spot to grow exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Wine

HāLo Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits seductive, complex aromas of ripe dark fruits, vanilla bean, chocolate, molasses, tobacco and mint. Lushly textured, its opulent, layered flavors are bolstered by ripe, warm tannins and savory roast coffee tones that enrich its long, luxurious finish.

The 2002 Vintage

An April frost and May rains were followed by ideal summer growing conditions of warm days and cool nights. Hot weather in late September accelerated ripening, but cooler temperatures in October allowed the grapes to develop concentrated fruit flavors, resulting in red wines with excellent color and intense, balanced flavors.

Vinification

HāLo is aged in small French oak barrels for up to 30 months. We select only the very best barrel lots for the final blend, which boasts a complex bouquet, rich, vibrant flavors, and a long, mouth-filling finish.

Food Affinities

HāLo Cabernet Sauvignon should be reserved for the finest cuts of full-flavored beef, lamb and game.

Our Estate Vineyard

HāLo Cabernet Sauvignon is named for our children, Hailey and Loren, who grew up in the middle of our Hillspring Vineyard in the Mayacamas foothills of western Napa Valley, the source of this superb red wine. It's a magical property with wild blackberries, bay trees, a creek, and rocky, exceptionally well-drained soils. The shallow soils and the vineyard’s location in the Mayacamas foothills, sheltered from fog and wind, make Hillspring the perfect spot to grow exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon.

About Trefethen

In 1968, our family purchased seven farms surrounding a magnificent, but run-down, 19th-century winery in southern Napa Valley and created Trefethen Family Vineyards. At the time, there were fewer than 30 working wineries in Napa Valley. True to our original vision of creating a classic wine estate, we have never purchased a single outside grape. Instead, we lavish extraordinary care on our two sustainably farmed estate vineyards in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. Controlling all viticultural practices allows us to produce grapes with pure, intense flavors beautifully reflecting our unique terroir.

Awards & Honors

95 Score / Three-Puff Rating
"Trefethen's tēte de cuvée bottling once again assumes its place at the very head of the current Cabernet class, and it hits every mark of success from depth and balance to sheer fruity volume and absolutely gorgeous oak. It is at once a wine of enormous substance, yet it is so polished and carefully composed that it seems almost graceful and light on its feet."
